The Perfect Pizza

Pizza is one of our favourites foods and when we need something quick and easy to cook we often cook mushroom,  rocket and fetta pizza using pita bread or any other similar bread base we happen to have. However this week a friend gave us some of their homemade tomato pizza sauce so we used some different toppings and decided to try making our own bases.  The verdict? Tomatoes, cheese and basil make the best pizza toppings!

Recipe
Makes 2 pizzas

Base:

  • 500g Baker’s flour, sifted
  • 1 cup of lukewarm water
  • 1.5t salt
  • 1.5t olive oil
  • 1.5t dry yeast (1 sachet)

Topping:

  • Dave’s home made pizza sauce*
  • 1 Punnet of cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 4 slices ham, chopped
  • Bunch of basil, torn
  • 2T Oregano, finely chopped
  • 1 cup Tasty cheese, grated
  • 1/2 Parmesan cheese, grated

* If you don’t have a mate called Dave who makes their own pizza sauce, then any tomato based sauce will do (Dave’s sauce had tomatoes, onions, garlic, basil and some sugar).

  1. For the base, mix yeast and water and set aside for 10 minutes until foaming
  2. Mix together flour and salt in a large bowl
  3. Pour in the yeast water and olive oil and mix
  4. Flour a bench and knead the dough until elastic (5-10 minutes)
  5. Put dough in oiled bowl and cover with cling wrap and/or a damp tea towel. Leave in a warm area until dough has doubled in size (~45 minutes)
  6. Cut dough in two and roll each into a base about 5mm thick and place on a baking tray. Leave the base in a warm place for a further 15 minutes and lightly brush with olive oil before adding toppings
  7. Pre-heat the oven to 200°C
  8. Once the pizza base is ready, spread the pizza sauce, scatter with oregano and then add the ham, tomatoes, basil, tasty cheese and finally top with the parmesan cheese
  9. Whack in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese has melted and is turning a golden colour
